Hi. My name is Beatrice Fennimore but people call me BZ, pronounced “BeeZee.” I am a teacher certified in early childhood education and special education, and for the past 25 years I’ve been a teacher educator and author with a passionate interest in child advocacy.

My doctoral dissertation at Teachers College, Columbia University in the 1980s was a political and advocacy history of PL 93-247 The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974. That research at the start of my career gave me the opportunity to interview many dedicated professionals across the United States who had participated in the development of child abuse legislation. This was a fantastic learning experience in the area of child advocacy. Over the years, I have developed a stronger awareness of how the abuse and neglect of children can exist in in many public forms, including political arenas and educational institutions. While a doctoral student at Teachers College, I also had the opportunity to create and teach a course called CT 4615 Young Children and Social Policy. I returned to Teachers College for 25 summers after graduation to continue to teach this course, which annually deepened my interest in child advocacy as well as my understanding of its complexities. Standing up for children in America is not an easy task!
